DEGEDEGE VEGETABLE FARMERS DISAPPOINTED (PAGE 20, MAR 4, 2010)

VEGETABLE farmers in the Degedege Irrigation Dam area in the Tain District in the Brong Ahafo Region have expressed their disappointment about the failure of the authorities of the Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP) to supply seeds and other farming inputs for cultivation as promised.
Some of the farmers who spoke to the Daily Graphic said they had prepared their lands waiting for seeds and other documentation when they were informed by the Tain District Food and Agricultural Directorate that the project could not take off.
An okro farmer, Nana Kwame Adjei, said the NRGP urged the farmers to prepare their lands, which they did but after doing so they were told that the project would not take off.
Mr K. Ampomah, a vegetable grower, also stated that the undue delay in the supply of the improved seeds had deterred most of the youth from engaging in agriculture in the Tain District.
The NRGP was scheduled to be operational in the Brong-Ahafo Region, this year, in the Kintampo North Municipality and Tain District for the pilot project.
The delay in the start of the programme has affected the morale of farmers in the district, since some of them who spoke to the Daily Graphic said they would not give the project and other future government programmes the needed attention.
