NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP SAT (PAGE 71, FEB 25, 2010)

All is set for the hosting of the 27th edition of the National Cross Country Championship in Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo regional capital, from today till Saturday.
The actual competition (the race) takes place on Saturday, at 6a.m., with the cpmpeting teams and athletes arriving today just as the general fitness and conditioning of athletes, medical screening, inspection of cross country route, coming off today.
The competition is being organised by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) under the joint distinguished patronage of the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ms Akua Sena Dansua, and the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo.
In all, 180 athletes, comprising six males and four females from each of the 10 regions, will participate in the competition, making a total of 108 males and 72 females.
Teams from the six security agencies, namely, Ghana Armed Forces, Immigration Service, Police, Fire Service, Prisons, the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), the University Sports Association (GUSA) and the Ghana Polytechnic Sports Association (GHAPSA) will also participate in the race.
The male athletes will cover a distance of 12 kilometres for the race while their female counterparts will run over a distance of eight kilometres, with both races starting and ending at the Sunyani Coronation Park.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic Mr George Osafo Adjei, the Secretary General of the GAA, said the competition was being supported by the National Sports Council (NSC), Voltic Mineral Water and Blue Skies natural fruits juice.
Mr Adjei appealed to other corporate bodies to sponsor the competition as a way of motivating local athletes.
