FARM LABOURER BEATEN TO DEATH (PAGE 27, MIRROR, JAN 16, 2010)

From Samuel Duodu, Sunyani.

A drinking bar operator and four others, who beat up a farm labourer, Kofi Dagarti, leading to his death on January 1, 2010 for allegedly stealing a bottle of Schnapps and Okyeame Bitters from his drinking spot, are in the firm grips of the law.
Kundoweh Yaw Zoona, 24, together with Kudjo Bayer, aka Macho, 24, Sumaila Haruna, 28, Abdul Dramanie, 29, and Donyeny Bayou, 25, were arraigned before the Kintampo Magistrate’s Court, charged with conspiracy and murder.
Their pleas were not taken and have thus been remanded to re-appear before the court, presided over by Mr Albert Zoogah on February 15, 2010.
Sergeant Tim Ahiaduvor, presenting the facts of the case, said Dagarti was a farm labourer, while all the accused persons were farmers who resided at Miawoni, near Kunsu in the Kintampo Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region
He said about three weeks ago, Dagarti went and settled at the village as a farm labourer and on January 1, 2010 in the night, there was a record dance at the village to entertain the inhabitants in which the deceased also participated.
Sgt. Ahiaduvor said about 11 p.m, Bayer arrested Dagarti for allegedly stealing a bottle of Schnapps and Okyeame Gin Bitters from the drinking bar and started beating him and also raised an alarm which attracted Haruna, Dramanie, Bayou and Zoona and two others, now at large, who joined Bayer.
He said later Bayer and the bar operator used a nylon rope to tie the legs of the deceased and continued to beat him mercilessly until he fell unconscious and died.
Sgt. Ahiaduvor said the unit committee chairman for the area, who heard about the incident, informed the assemblyman for the area, leading to the arrest of the accused persons. They were subsequently handed over to the police.
